Hello everybody, and thank you for tuning into "An Ocean Maybe?" - a scientific inspection of the soggier parts of Kanto. We're going to fly to Pallet Town and surf south.

I'm not doing a section for the surfing encounters because the only thing you run into at all is Tentacool, which is a Water / Poison type. You can also fish for Horsea and Staryu here (both pure Water types).

With all this moistness taken care of, we can now head back to Cinnibar Island and take a look around.

My goodness, that is the first screencap of this section. But I guess that's okay, there hasn't really been much to point out before now.

First of all let's check out the Pokemon Lab in the southwest. In the first room there are people who want to trade your Raichu for an Electrode (boo) and your Venonat for a Tangela. Tangela are somewhat rare and a bit tough to catch, so if you don't want to bother go ahead with that one. Check out the computer in the second room to read a message;
"The three legendary bird Pokemon are Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres. Their whereabouts are unknown. We plan to explore the cavern close to Cerulean."

This e-mail message is misleading! The cave close to Cerulean (which we cannot access currently) does house a legendary Pokemon but it's not any of those three... so... take that research team. Talk to the guy standing still to get TM35 Metronome. When used this move randomly transforms into another move - absolutely any move in the game. It's kind of fun, but no very reliable obviously.

In the rightmost room there is this man who will revive Pokemon from our fossils! Finally we can get rid of these! You have to hand them over one at a time, but all you have to do is leave the building and come back and the Pokemon will be ready for you - if you have an empty slot in your party, of course. If you don't, you can use one of the computers in this room to temporarily store one of your teammates.

The other man in this room will trade you a Seel in exchange for a Ponyta, also.

We're done here, so lets go to the northwest building (the gym is currently off-limits anyway).

If you've found the other 4 then don't bother picking this up, it will just take up space and store clerks won't pay you anything for it (they will still take it, though). Pick up an Escape Rope to the northeast. For now, backtrack and go up the stairs.

Engage the trainer to the southwest.

Go through some small rooms to the northeast to find a Calcium. Backtrack to where we first came up and go up another set of stairs to find another trainer.

Get this hidden item, and then a visible Max Potion to the south. Go back down the stairs, then go north for more stairs leading to a separate section of the third floor.

Go east here to find an item ball containing an Iron. Back in the direction of the stairs, inspect the statue and answer yes to the prompt. We not have access to the southeast room (whereas the west will now be cut off). There is someone in the way, though.

Ignore the stairs to the east, they lead to a dead end. Instead drop down over the edge here and find another pesky scientist to trample on or ignore as you see fit.

Find a Carbos south of the trainer and then take the eastern stairs down. Over to the west is a room with a burglar.

Pick up the TM14 Blizzard from the corner and then flip the switch on the statue. Exit to the west and keep going to the wall to pick up a Full Restore. Backtrack all the way northeast of the stairs for a corridor with another scientist.

Keep going, pressing the switch in the room with the beds and getting the Rare Candy in the room left of there. Get TM22 Solarbeam from the table in the next room, then continue on to the final chamber.

One final hidden item here, and then grab the Secret Key in the ball on the floor. Use an escape rope to get out if you wish, or just go back up the stairs and use the exit in the room to the right (there won't be a visible door or anything, just a break in the wall). Note if you do decide to go out without using the rope, you will have to deactivate both the switches you've pressed.

With the key in our possession we are ready to take on the next gym.

Cinnibar Island Gym Challenge

In this gym you must inspect (what I think is?) a speaker in each room and answer a question. If you get the answer wrong, you must fight the trainer. However I always fight every trainer anyway so for me it's entirely pointless. But regardless, you may not have as much time on your hands as I do.
As far as typing goes, this gym is pretty straight-forward Fire users. The type is weak to Water, Ground and Rock. If you didn't start with Squirtle or fish up a Magikarp/Poliwag/Goldeen early on you've had plenty opportunity to get a Water type recently, even being given Lapras and having revived a fossil. The fossil Pokemon are actually not a bad choice here if you save the TM for Rock Slide and teach them surf, though you'd have to have kept an empty space in your party for a very long time. Really, even if you don't have a Water/Rock/Ground type, plenty of other Pokemon can learn Surf and Earthquake (Snorlax for example).
